The Background and Mission of Paw's Place
By Nancy Janovetz, President and Founder

Paw's Place Animal Rescue was organized as a no-kill, non-profit domestic animal rescue due to my deeply felt desire to reduce the number of animals that were being euthanized annually in our county.

I worked for 2 years as a volunteer for two no-kill shelters, and the county animal services, finding homes for over 250 dogs. In 1999, I established the corporation for Paw's Place, I filed the IRS documents for a non-profit organization, and then set out to find the perfect location for the shelter. In June 1999, Paw's Place, Inc. purchased a 5 acre tract of land in Boiling Spring Lakes. I then designed the dog kennels and layout, paying special attention to the needs of the dogs especially their needs for comfort, safety, and proper hygiene. With the help of volunteers, 42 covered kennels were completed in about 90 days. The shelter had its first occupants before it was totally completed. Five additional acres were purchased in June of 2003.

Our mission is LIFE, and we pursue it four ways:

  • we save pets—the abandoned, the abused and the neglected, whose previous backgrounds were ALL filled with neglect due to overpopulation and uninformed owners, who lacked the foresight to spay or neuter, or to provide heartworm preventative for their domestic pets.
  • we nurse them back to health;
  • we provide a sanctuary for those who are unadoptable;
  • and, most important of all, we find them loving homes — no matter how long it takes, one LIFE at a time.

Our purpose to the community

Paw's Place receives unwanted, abused and neglected animals from the community, and in return, provides healthy companion animals. Paw's Place has several programs with the community schools to provide animal care education, and volunteer work programs. From August 1999 to December 2003, we have adopted over 565 dogs and puppies and house another 100.

As a no-kill facility, Paw's Place has developed a consistent following of devoted individuals, who believe in the mission of the shelter, and bring their labors of love to these homeless animals in our charge. Those who follow our efforts from their homes and hearts, have supported Paw's Place with monetary donations to keep us supplied with food and funds for veterinary expenses that appear to be endless. Hurricanes put an additional burden of numerous homeless animals on our financial capabilities that we have managed to overcome. We are members of Brunswick CART Brunswick County Animal Response Team, and helped to develop the plan for our county emergency response (fires, hurricanes etc).

In Summary:

Paw's Place is a 5 acre humanitarian facility, operating entirely on donations and volunteers, out of a love for animals. Paw's Place accomodates lost, abandoned, and injured dogs and cats. We give our animal friends an opportunity to be loved, have a chance at life, and hopefully, find a new family.

Paw's Place is located approximately 5 miles east of Route 87 on Boiling Spring Road (one mile north of Camp Pretty Pond), in the City of Boiling Spring Lakes (Winnabow post office).
